“Romantics New and Old” will highlight masterpieces of the 1820s and of the 2010s: Schubert’s Quartettsatz (1820) and Giuliani’s Grand Concert Variations (1829), plus the New Jersey Premiere of Joan Tower’s String Quartet No. 5 “White Water” (2011) and the World Premiere of the new version of Nuevo Tango master Daniel Binelli’s “Sexteto Buenos Aires” (2012). Binelli’s scintillating music captures the passion and intensity of the tango, bringing it directly from Buenos Aires to Clinton.

Praised by The New Yorker as “a fresh and vital young participant in what is a golden age of American string quartets,” the Daedalus Quartet has established itself as a leader among the new generation of string ensembles. In the ten years of its existence the Daedalus Quartet has received plaudits from critics and listeners alike for the security, technical finish, interpretive unity, and sheer gusto of its performances.

Hailed as a “revelation to hear” by The Washington Post, the Newman & Oltman Guitar Duo’s phenomenal musicianship places them solidly at the top of their field. Their innovative programming, matchless technique and ensemble precision, combined with their commitment to expanding the repertoire for guitar duo make them a standout chamber ensemble in every way. Highlights of the duo’s season include the world premiere of “Concierto Buenos Aires” composed for the Duo by Daniel Binelli with l’Orchestre de l’Opéra de Reims in France and with the Virginia Symphony (JoAnn Falletta, music director).

“The Daedalus Quartet seemed it was flying not on wings of waxy feathers, but rather on jet-propelled rockets of blistering virtuosity… The music rang gloriously, and the audience emerged wowed and grateful.”
- The Washington Post

“The Newman & Oltman Duo possesses great musicality and ensemble technique. They are remarkable innovators, recognized for their tours around the world and counted among the most renowned guitarists today.”

Racing along with our new global society, duoJalal surprises the music world with their diverse and stunning artistry. Like the marriage between Kathryn Lockwood and Yousif Sheronick, their music represents an organic amalgam of cultural traditions and musical styles. Audiences are enthralled as Kathryn, a classically trained violist from Australia, ignites her instrument with passion, while Yousif, of Lebanese descent, dazzles as he manipulates sound by simply snapping his fingers at the edge of an Egyptian frame drum or dragging his foot across the Peruvian cajón. Inspired by their namesake, 13th-century poet Jalal a din Rumi, whose visions and words brought together people of different religions, cultures, and races, duoJalal opens their doors to all communities for a diverse and stimulating inter-cultural experience.

“New York Mix” is a stunning testament to the vibrant multicultural fabric of New York City. Featuring music that both crosses the globe and bends genres, this program presents works commissioned and arranged for the duo by their New York-based friends and colleagues, including Derek Bermel, Kenji Bunch, David Krackauer, Inessa Zaretsky, and John Patitucci.

“duoJalal are fearless seekers and synthesizers of disparate instruments and cultures”
- Toronto Star

“Listening to duoJalal is an exhilarating sonic and somewhat mystical experience [that] will more than gratify your senses.”

Meridionalis is Americas Society’s vocal ensemble, dedicated to the performance of choral music from Latin America. Conducted by Sebastián Zubieta, Music Director at Americas Society, the group has appeared at major festivals in the region. Meridionalis will perform music for voice and organ written and heard in the cities of Rio de Janeiro and Salvador da Bahia in the first decades of the 19th century, when the establishment of the Portuguese crown in Brazil caused political turmoil and unexpected musical development in the colony. The program includes liturgical and secular pieces by Damião Barbosa Araújo, who was born in Bahia, followed the court to Rio and returned to Salvador, where he was Kapellmeister until the 1850s, José Maurício Nunes-Garcia, Kapellmeister to the Portuguese crown in Rio, and Sigismund Neukomm, Austrian protégé of Joseph Haydn who lived in Rio in the 1810s.

The members of Meridionalis are Elizabeth Baber and Jolle Greenleaf, sopranos; Luthien Brackett and Corey-James Crawford, altos; Timothy Hodges, tenor; Steven Hrycelak, Thomas McCargar, basses; with guest organist, and Sebastián Zubieta, conductor.
